My SUPER , Awesome and cool skills in my native language!!!!!!

OK I feel more tired now, but anyways Im excited to tell about some of my skills. I believe that one of my skills is that I am a good listener and Im not the best person when it comes to take notes, but the way I can apply this is to listen closely and more focus on the main ideas. Another skill that I can tell is that I like to talk and discuss with people, so I guess this can help me have the right motivation to talk to my classmates in English and learn from them as well. I love getting to know different cultures and try to emulate good study habits...

My experience in the GAP this semester!!!!

Actually to begin I will say that i'm very tired because is late, but I do want to share how I feel about this great experience. First, I am very happy with myself and I am grateful for the wonderful teachers I had this semester. Second, I recognize that I have improve and learn more that I think or see, because I believe learning is a continue process, for some people it takes longer to progress, but for other is more easy, but I can say that is all about ATTITUDE. Finally, I can say that something that I can do to prepare for next semester is applying the things that I have learnd ad the things that were the most helpful and useful for me. I love English and I love Learning English, specially at a wonderful place like the ELC.
  • Do I feel like I have improved my English? Why or why not?
  • Do I feel like I know how to better learn by myself and in the classroom?
  • What goals do I have for future improvement with my English learning?
  • What can I do to prepare myself for next semester?
  • What has been helpful to me this semester?
  • What has been unhelpful to me?

  • These question are improtant to me who will study next semester again.
At the beginning of the semester I felt homesick and it was hard for me. Even though as times went by it was getting better but it affcted my studying English a lot. I realized thant  enjoying studying and maintaining my good condition are more importnt  for me to improve my  English.  I don't satisfied with my studying but I think that my English actually has developed. My goal for next semester is to focus on classes , writing an essay 300 for 30minutes in less grammar erros and speaking without pause.

Do you feel you have made progress in your language skill? why?

I think that I improved this semester because I learned more how to express my ideas in English, specially when I speak and I write, of course I need to practice more. I have to work in my structure everyday. Read and write can help me to be better in this language. I think that I speak better and I can think more quickly in English becuase most of the times I dream in English.

    Metacognitive Blog Post 6 Speak

For me it is really easy to speak in front of people in my own language. I think it is a good skill, I think I can apply it in English as well.  Practice always is really good, it is important to trust in ourselves always and we are going to improve more!  We need to study vocabulary and try to have good structure. We we think more clearly we are going to have more opportunities to express ourselves better.

    Metacognitive Blog Post 6

I am a pretty good writer in my native language. But the writing still I have can't not support me to write what ever I want I do in Chinese, the strategy that I use is try my best to translate my idea into English and then have a native speaker to to retouch it.

    My native launguies skills

I am good at Korean because I am a Korean. When I think about childhood, I didn't good at reading, writing because I was child and I didn't know many word. As time went by, my reading and writing was better by trying read book a lot. It is really helpful to read book. However, I know how hard is read book. Even though I didn't like book in Korean, It is more difficult to read book in English. Reading is really important to improve language. When I reading book, I could find new word and I could learn. At first, it was not easy, but I became a girl of literature. I also writing ability getting better. I think it is important to find own hobbies connected with English. If we do that, we can keep our works without boring. In my case, I love dramas(TV shows) so I tried to watch American dramas. It will be helpful for listening and speaking. I want to find how I can study with interest.

It is for Metacognitive Blog Post 6

    End of the class

I feel like I have improved my English especially for writing. I wrote not good essay at first, but I feel I am getting better. When I concentrate to class, I could learn more. I also, got more knowledge when I did my homework. I want to go university in USA and I want to improve my English in the school. I can prepare for next semester by studying myself. And I can experience work, travel, and so on. It was helpful to do my homework and I could improved my writing skill. However, sometimes I didn't like GAP hour. Because sometimes I didn't have motivation, so I didn't work hard. I just wasted my time. I need to planning my time.

    Endure to the end.

I have a great time this semester to learn English , and I improve so much. At the beginning it was so hard for me to understand my class but step by step i learn a lot. English is so hard to learn but I am trying everyday to learn it even though I makes a lot of mistakes in my Grammar and other stuff. At the end of this semester i can say i learn a lot and I am so happy study at ELC and thank you Miss Clack to teach me. I have a great Happy Christmas!!! God bless you and your Family.

    Emma!!

    Metacognitive Blog Post 7

After one semester in the ELC, I do feel that I have made a big improvement I didn't even expect in the very beginning. I now can write paragraphs and essays more fluently, and they finally make sense. I can take notes faster with structure. I now can communicate with native speaker better.
It feels different studying alone from studying in the classroom. When feel like I really need to focus on my assignment, I prefer bringing my homework home and finish it alone. Those group subjects I do with my classmates of course, and also stay in the lab when I don't feel like doing any work to cheer myself up.
There are several goals I have for future improvement, such as, I want to finish the two books That I choose for the Christmas break, and . Speed up my reading rate to 200 words per minute. typing rate 40 WPM. Write a 350 essay in 30min.
I think I'll just keep up reading to prepare for the next semester.
The typing program, soft read, all kinds of exercises that the reading teacher gave us, writing assignments, lab hours and the activities were all very helpful.
But the presentations we did were not effective except the one with movies.

    Endure to the end!!!

I have improved my English for this semester, but not as much as last semester. But I think that is my problem, I did not try my best. I remembered last semester I had an assignment for Listening and speaking class was watching movie/TV for half hour. Another assignment for Writing was writing down your daily life for 10 minutes. For me, these two assignment helped me a lot. This semester I learned how to enjoy writing! Next semester I will take a break, I will make plans to study by my own to prepare next semester just like what we did this semester. I know I need to improve my Listening, vocabulary and Writing words count. I think learning languages you need to have the heart and endure to the end. Add oil! Haha that’s how we say in Chinese to encourage people!!!

I do feel that my English had improved, however I was expecting more improvement in my writing skills.
I hope that in the future I can have more time in class to learn how to write a paragraph, and essay as well.
Next semester I will be more aware to learn more vocabulary and read more as well, because I thing that is one of most of effective activity.

    My improvements in learning English

Hello everybody, since one month ago I started to think seriously about what I learned this semester. For me This semester was hard, when a came to the first class I was disappointed because almost everybody spoke very well. I feel a little uncomfortable. This was why I did not like to speak in classes, but after a time I started to change my mind. Now I can tell you that I realize I learned more things that I thought before. Now when I speak I can see my errors more clear than before. Also I learned to develop my own skills, how to study and what sources use . This were the most important things. I could not accomplish all my goals, but it was because I did less that I could. I will never forget that to be at the ELC teach me more things than only English. I had interesting experiences this time in my life that I will never forget. I learned to understand and love to others. I made a lot of new friends that they helped to me to see the life with different eyes. I feel so blessed for that. During the next semester, I will work very hard and I´m sure I will achieve my goals. Now I´m feel more confident!

    I'm getting better

In this semister, I have improved a lot because I tried to study hard and I practiced much more than last semister. I still like learning English, so I should continue to study English for my goal.
When I read a American novel, I was so happy because I understood clearly. It gave me to build up self-confidence and better attitude.

I developed my own way to learn and I will be better prepared for the next semester. I intend to keep my enthusiastic and had work, some students have a decrease in the second semester, but I will effort myself to this don’t happen. As I look back on This Semester...

I studied harder in this semester than last semester even though maintaining motivation continuously was sometimes difficult for me. To be honest, I was disappointed about being in the GAP and frustrated with its program, because many of my former classmates went to AA. I thought they are studying more advanced things, and I have envied them. However, I didn't want to lose my motivation for studying, because I didn't want to waste my time and money; thus I decided to study hard and I did it. Also, I thought that if I studied hard, and if I couldn't improve my English, I would be able to blame the GAP program for that. But fortunately, I passed the Michigan Test today, so I can go to LDSBC next year~. Yay! :D Although I didn't like the GAP program, I didn't give up studying, so I could improve my English as a result.
Actually, I hadn't been able to recognize the improvement of my English skills, but I realized that I've surely progressed my English so far since the beginning of this semester. I've learned the importance of working hard continuously in this semester. To sum up, I liked this semester and am grateful for my teachers! Of course for my classmates too!

    Dear Students,

This is the last assignment on the metacognitive blog this semester. I want you to think and then write about this semester's learning experience in the GAP. Here are some questions that can help you:
    • Do I feel like I have improved my English? Why or why not?
    • Do I feel like I know how to better learn by myself and in the classroom?
    • What goals do I have for future improvement with my English learning?
    • What can I do to prepare myself for next semester?
    • What has been helpful to me this semester?
    • What has been unhelpful to me?

    Exercise C 1
    september 19, 2011

I prefer study at home because It is more quiet and I can concentrate in what I am doing, without any interruption or distraction. I like to revise my notes, and make a list of what I need to learn, and them, I try to memorize by writing the samething many times.

    Chinese and English

My native language is Mandarin Chinese. I think I am a pretty good Chinese reader. However, my English reading skill is terrible. I love reading! I used to read a lot when I was in Taiwan. I read everyday and I went to book store every weekend. Try to ready everyday can develop good reading habits. Reading in English is difficult for me because the vocabulary that I know is limited. But I know if I have good reading habits would help me build up my vocabulary. I think vocabulary is the most basic skill we need to improve because we can understand it when people talk or we can express ourselves well if we have enough vocabulary. So Yes! I am learning. I am learning English. I am learning how to develop good reading habits!!!

My native language and learning English

I was thinking about the question for this week. If I could compare my skills in my native language, I think my best skill is to be a good listener. It help me a lot because in English there is more sounds than it Spanish. During my first semester I was thinking that I will never understand English because for my opinion the people spoke very fast, but I tried to watch movies every day and I learned to distinguish the words and the sounds. sometimes when I´m listening I feel confused because I do not understand the meaning of the words this is why In my opinion for became a good listener we need to have more vocabulary in our mind. Today this is my new goal.

    DEAR FRIENDS

Learning English is not really easy for me, but in life you need to learn many things to be important the society. I am really hope because of me that i am learning a new English for the first time in my life and i see i make a lot progress. I learn English by many steps, i go to school amd work hard by myself to be better everyday and hear people talk about everyday and know hoe the pronounce some words, and forget to translate world in my own languages. now I fell i make alot of efforts. i will keep going to achieve what i need in English , I know couldn't be really perfect like a native American but I Ill do my best to people understand me when I talk and write.

    Language Learning Skills

I'm a pretty good reader in my own language, which is Japanese. Yes, I am pretty sure that I'm good at reading because I got always great scores for my reading class when I was a student. Because I can read and understand well, I can write well, too! Sorry for being too much confident...but it's only for in Japanese. Because English and Japanese have very different styles of writing, writing and reading in English are not as easy as in Japanese. If I wrote in English like I do in Japanese, it would be a little weird; actually many tutors asked me what I was trying to say in my essay many times last semester, so my skills in my native language weren't really helpful. However, since I am getting used to English writing structures gradually, I'm a little bit comfortable with writing in English now. So if I had to write an essay in Japanese, I would use the same strategies, like how to organize my essays. For me, English writing is clearer and easier to understand than Japanese writing, so I won't use my Japanese writing strategies in 5 -paragraph-essays, but the strategies I've learned since I came here.
Oh, I almost forgot, but for reading, I sometimes use the same strategies as in Japanese when I read in English and answer questions. I skim the passage first, then I start to answer the questions. I don't read the whole passage deliberately, but only the important information to answer the questions. As I use this strategy, sometimes I make mistakes, but mostly I get correct answers. I think it is a good skill for reading.

how I can apply my native language in English language learning.

how I can apply my native language in  English language learning?

I used to  write a dairy in Korean before I came to U. S.A. This made my daily problems solve well and calmed myself. As a result , In this process, I used a lot of various words to express my thinking and feeling. So  I think that writing a diary is a good way to be applied to improve English language because it needs to think and express in English. First, looking back a day through, I think about events and feelings. Second, the process of writing, I have to check words and sentences to express my thinking and feeling exactly as much as I can. In conclusion, writing a daily in English is one of the best ways to develop my English.

    Metacognitive Blog Post 6

    Dear Students,

It time to think about thinking again. This blog post assignment I want you to write about what skills you already possess in your native language and how you have used, or how you want to use them better in English. For example, you might be an excellent reader in your native language because you read a lot, or you might an excellent listener because you take notes. So you need to think about something you do well in your native language and then discuss how you have applied or how you can apply it in your English language learning.

    Have a great weekend!

How have I made improvement in my English language ability so far this semester?

How have I made improvement in my English language ability so far this semester?

I think that I have made an improvement in my English language because of my change in attitude , oral expression and reducing the  time to write an essay. First, my attitude has changed when I speak in English. It means that now I have no fear when I speak to native speakers. For example, at the beginning of this semester, I couldn't talk to a cashier at the supermarket, even though they didn't use difficult words. Now I am no longer  nervous  when I talk with native speakers. As a result, I can communicate with people better than before. Second, I came to understand a lot of  expressions for oral conversation. For example, I didn't understand  like this expression.  " Is your schedule that backed up?" Before two months ago I only knew the expression "I back up my computer". Finally, I can write an essay faster than before. When the semester started it took 30minutes to write just 80words but now I can write an essay 200words more in 30minutes. It indicates that I can brainstorm a lot and make  a good outline during short time before writing the essay. In conclusion, I think that I have improved my English ability so far this semester.

    Getting better

I belive that my english skills are getting better. I practice speaking to use recording and I read a book everyday. However, learning English is still very hard for me. I usaully spend my life in a hard time for my future^*^

Do you feel you have made progress in your language skill? why?

I think that I need to practice a little bit more in my structure and in my grammar we I speak because it is really hard to be organize. If I practice more in those things my speaking it is going to be more automatic. Eventually I can noticed that I can speak better but I think that it is not enough.

How does my English has become better!!!!

First of all, I still have a lot of mistakes in grammar and quite a bit in my pronunciation. But, I am doing an effort every day to improve in all areas. For example, something that is helping me tremendously is that I live with an American family, so I speak English all the time. I feel that I have improve more than I think, learning another language requires a sincere effort.

    My progress in English

I do not know if a improved my english this semester, I´m learning new things in grammar but for me is difficult to use that because I have few oportunities to practice my english. I think my speaking did not improve nothing because I still make mistakes all the time. I´m confused about other skills I do not know what to say. I thing the best thing that i can do is study more, that´s it.

    My progress in English Skills

I think that I made a lot of progress in my English skill specially in Grammar.
Before i was so bad in grammar, I feel that I become better but not good .
I am trying to have a good English skill even though that will be hard for me, but will learn as soon I can. I will keep doing working in my Skills.

The Improvement in My English Language Ability

Actually I did not notice if I have improved my English language ability or not until my friend told me “Yes!” I did improve my English. A couple of weeks ago, I visited my friend in West Jordon. We have not seen each other for two months, of course we had so many things to tell. I told my friend about my stories, which happened at the ELC in the past two months. She told me that I really did improve my English and I used more tenses, for example: I have been waiting for the bus since 1 PM. She told me that even the sentences that I used were very simple but they made the stories more fluent. So don’t underestimate yourself! Do your best, nothing is impossible! you will never realize how great ability you have.

How have I made improvement in my English language ability so far this semester?

Hmm..., I don't know if my English has improved this semester or not... but I think that I've become more comfortable with speaking to myself as I record myself to computer. I hated it last semester, of course I don't still like it, but I've gotten used to it a little bit more because of SMILES log. I do not like SMILES log either, even the name, but I like it in another way since it gives me a lot of great challenges. Although some people don't like pressure, I like being pressured if it's not too much.
I hope I can get better English when the semester ends...

How have I made improvement in my English language ability so far this semester?

Well, I think that I can more fully understand the words when someone is speaking and my vocabulary grew, also I became a better writer because the structures that we have been teaching and practicing this semester. My pronunciation became better and people started understand what I say. My English is getting so much better since I arrive in the U.S.A. and I started study at the ELC.

Do I feel I have made progress in your language skill?

After studying in the ELC for two months, I feel I have improved a lot more than I though I can be. My typing speed has gone to 33WPM from 18WPM. When I am writing a article, I can be more organizing, express my ideas more fluently than I use to, and focus on the topic. Also, I have learn a lot of new words especially academic words.

Do you feel you have made progress in your language skill?

I couldn't recognize my improvement, but if I think the first time that I came to here, I can know how much did I improve to my English skills. It is not too much, but I feel that English is more comfortable. I understand people's conversation even though it is not complete. Also, when I write, I can more express what I want to say. However, my speaking ability is still really weak. It is my the biggest problem. I need to learn more and more.
To analyze your own improvement is a little bit odd, because you can not see easily your own improvement. It is similar to measure kids growing up, we never realize the gradual progress; however, our improvement can be measure by grades, and by how comfortable we feel when we are speaking in English. For me, I believe that my improvement in writing and grammar is growing so slow that I could not noticed. The more I learn, the more I feel that I need to learn more.

    Metacognitive Blog Post 5

For this blog post you need to answer the question:

How have I made improvement in my English language ability so far this semester?

You can use examples from class activities, the lab hour, and activities you do while you are not at the ELC or in class.

    reading strategy

To read more efficiently, I think that there are two points.  First, guess the main ideas with titles and skimming  articles. You can understand contests  quickly and easily if you guess them before you read. Second, choose easy things about which  you want to know  and then read more specialized and difficult things. After gaining knowledge about something you want to know from easy articles , the knowledge will help you read more academic ones.

    Reading

When I came to Provo, I often went the Provo library to read children books. I read to many of them. After that, I read my favorite books such as mystery and romantic books. In my opinion, interesting books may help you so much to improve reading skills.

    Reading

When we read is important to assimilate the information in order to progress academically or in any way. On some occasions we have assignments to read very large files. The reading does not mean you know, so it is best to patterns of information that will help us understand these readings and to study for a better way. Reading is practiced, while we read more the better our understanding and ability.

    Becoming a better reader

The most obviously way of improve ones reading capabilities is to read a lot more. The more you read, the better reader you become. In this regard I’d recommend you to not only read a lot but also to read frequently. We can make a schedule for reading everyday. Be sure to keep yourself accountable. If you want to become a better reader you need to have discipline.
Everyone has their own way to learn English best. To me, I think talking to the English speaker is more helpful than the other ways. Reading some news every day could help you to enhance your vocabulary range. But do not give up when you feel you can't do it any more.

    Reading!!!!

Reading is the biggest strategies for me. When I read I felt really tired.
I don't really like do that, but I should too ,because that will help me to fix my English Skill.
Reading is the good way to learn a lot of things like, vocabulary, new words and have more comprehensions. I like to read in my own Languages but not in english , that make me kinda boring. Anyway guys don't give up, keep going. Read the book which can make us feel happy and interest for you.

    Have Fun!!!!!!!

    Strategies for reading

Reading in English is hard for me, so I would choose a book that I am interested to help me focus on the book. Also don't choose a book which is too easy or hard for you. if it is too easy you can not learn from the book, too hard you don't understand and it makes you feel sleepy. Try to guess the meaning of vocabulary when you see new words. If you think it is an important word, write it down and build up your vocabulary notes. This is how I read and learn new vocabulary :)

    Becoming a better reader

I like to read the news every day because I can find new and academic vocabulary, also reading is something that I enjoy doing because I know that if I read consistently my writing will eventually get a lot more better. In addition highlighting the past tense of all the verbs is something that I found useful......becoming an efficient reader is a process of all your life.

    Became a Better Reader

I´m not sure how became a better reader in English, but I think it could be read, read , and read. Because when I started to study English I never thought that I could do it. To practice made me more confident in reading. I think in the same time we need to learn and memorize new words because if we dont understand the meaning of the words, we can read quick but we will not understand nothing. Only read is not a good goal. Read and understand this need to be our real goal. We do not have another choice only read, read, and read, and have patient.

Some Strategies or Skills that Have Helped Me to Become a Better Reader

I think that what helped me was to choose some reading that was very interesting for me because its become a pleasurable activity. In additional when I choose some reading that I am familiar with, I can read faster with the same level of comprehension and I can guess the words easily.

Metacognitive Blog Post 4 -Becoming a Better Reader-

Hmm..., this is a very difficult topic to write for me...because my reading skill is very poor. Hmmm........probably...if you learn more new vocabulary words and grammar, you would be able to understand what you read, maybe. I don't know. I'm not sure.
Actually if I don't use a dictionary when I read academic reading, I cannot understand anything at all. I've heard many people say that we shouldn't use a dictionary as we read as far as possible-we need to guess the word we don't know by the content. However, it wasn't a good idea for me because I couldn't understand anything without a dictionary. So I prefer to use a dictionary as I read in order to understand fully.
I think that if someone really want to increase his reading skill and vocabulary words, he ought not to use a dictionary as he reads, because if he used a dictionary always, he cannot have opportunities to think by himself, also he can forget easily the word he looked up. But for school assignment, not using a dictionary is not a very good idea. We have quizzes and tests for our reading assignments frequently, so we have to understand and memorize everything what we read. ...Anyways, reading is super difficult!!!!

    Strategies for reading

Reading is really hard to me because I don't know many vocabulary. Also, I'm so slow to read. It is my problem. I think knowing vocabulary and read quickly is the most important strategies. For that, we need to be a diligent. Memorize vocabulary and read regulary. Taking note that organize to important information is also helpful for reading. It is easy to say and I knew already a lot of strategies, but practicing is hard to me.
I have been reading the newspaper and the book for the book report asigement everyday. Also, I read the "soft reading" three times a week, and in my oppinion that strategies have helped me to improve my reading skills.

    Metacognitive Blog Post 4

Typing and learning new vocabularies effected me faster than other activities. They both helped me got my reading rate from 95 words/min to 110 words/min within two weeks. I didn't really spend time on them more than other activities, but I can comprehend more than last two weeks because I saw the new words I've just learned, and typing really helped me on recognize the meaning faster.

    Metacognitive Blog Post 4

    Dear Students,

This week I want you to think about some strategies or skills that have helped you to become a better reader. You can talk about both narrative and expository reading if you would like.

You can focus on top-down skills like comprehension, or bottom-up skills like vocabulary and inferencing skills.

    Good luck!

    Vocabulary

Seriously! I need more vocabulary! I am still looking for some strategies to build up my vocabulary. I am collecting vocabulary when I am reading books or watching movies. If I don't know the vocabulary when I watch movies, I would I ask my American friends to explain for me. I write down the words that I don't understand while I am reading, and then I would check it on dictionary. I like the way that how I learn right now, but I just started it so I'll let you know if my strategies work well for me :)

    Tuesday, September 27, 2011

What is one activity/strategy you have used to increase your vocabulary knowledge?

I don't know. I just learned them and still just remember. Perhaps I'll forget some words tomorrow.
I haven't done any specific activities to increase my vocabulary words. That is why my vocabulary is really poor...I have to think about that. I want to know good strategies for increasing my vocabulary words.

    Vocabulary

I needed to memorize a lot of vocabulary in school. Memorizing vocabulary was really important. Of course it is important for learning other language. When I was student, I used all sense for memorize like writing, looking, speaking, listening. It is more helpful than only use one sense. However, after passed time, I forgot almost word. I think the most effective way for memorizing vocabulary is making sentence and try to use the word that I just memorize. If I use the word, I remember long time. Like this, also I can learn right situation that word can use. It is really confuse because there are a lot of vocabulary that meaning is similar. Each vocabulary used at different situation. According to this method, I can learn a lot of vocabulary and can use correctly.

Increasing my vocabulary to be more efficient......

Something that has been really helpful is to read the news paper, because there's so many great words and some of those words belong to the AWL. Also not just reading the news ,but watching the news and putting an effort to adopt those words and use them in a daily basis has been a key to accomplish my goals of increasing my vocabulary so that I can become more efficient.

    About vocabulary

I have a vocabulary books, so I use this book. When I memorize vocabulary, I make a peace of paper, then I write down on the paper with part of speesh and definisoin and sentence . Also, reading books are very useful for vocabulary.

    Learning new vocabulary

In my case, I read a vocabulary book from my country. It is very helpful for me, but I didn't read for a long time... I will read it from tomorrow :)

    How I learn Vovabulary!!!

I learn a lot of vocabulary by reading books, watching TV show and read news paper.
That help me to make my speaking stronger and more influence. I know that, if you want to make your speaking better is to know a lot of vocabulary each day, and try to use it while you speaking to other people.

    Learning for reading or talking

When I read books or news, I write down the word that I think they are import or I want to know.
Even now, I still try to find my way to make my English to improve more.

    Strategies used for increase vocabulary

Usually for increase my vocabulary I see movies because the movies can show as a lot of new words, in adition you can understand the meaning in the context, after that I look at the dictionary for to know the exact meaning of the word.

    Reading News

I have been learning new vocabulary from the newspaper and I tried to apply those words in my everyday life.

The strategy I have used to increase my vocabulary knowledge

What is one activity/strategy you have used to increase your vocabulary knowledge?

I ask native speakers the exact pronounce and the spelling of words that I don't know during conversation with them. After I write them on my note, I try to use the words  next time.

What is one activity/strategy you have used to increase your vocabulary knowledge?

I memorized some talks of the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day-Saints, and I looked for the meaning of the new words. This activity helped me, bring the Spirit even more to my, I learned new vocabulary and I started to use the correct prepositions automatically.

Now I am learning English also I am developing my talents. I want to be free to do anything and anytime I want to do, I don't want someone to control my time and tell me what do do. I would try my best to accomplish my goal to satisfy myself, but I don't need to have a big big career. I think if I can control my time that is a success for me. Because in Taiwan a lot of people need to work overtime for their bosses and do not have good life quality.

    David's answer

I prefer to study in a library because I cannot study in noisy places or loud places. And my academic goal is to get a good TOEFL score and going to the college in Las Vegas. I would like to live in a crowded city or a big city like Las Vegas, NYC, or CA, because living in Utah is so boring for me and also I grew up in a capital of Korea. That is why I need to get my goal and it can change my life style. In my opinion, if I want to success in my level, I must do my homework, go to class everyday, and do not sleep in class. These reasons are why I prefer to study in a library and want to get a good grade for entering the college.

    p.6, Chapter 1, EXERCISE1-C

I prefer America to study. I don't know anything about other countries' educational system besides Japan and America ( Actually, I don't know well about American schools either, though...), but I know that colleges in Japan are really bad, unfortunately..., so I don't wanna study in Japan. I think Utah is a good place to study for everyone because of BYU. Studying here in America motivates me to study harder. My number one academic goal is going to LDS business college and study business there to accomplish my future goal, which is working with my dad as a business person. ( I don't know if it's an academic goal or not.) Studying is really tiring and sometimes I feel like doing something else for fun, but because I have good motivations that make me want to reach my goals, I can study everyday with joy ( kinda...).
I think, the key to academic success is to learn how to prioritize own work. There are many things to do everyday, but time is limited. We need to know what is the first priority and have to focus on it.

    Don't be shy

I have one strategy to learn English. It is that you don't be shy because English is second language to you. When I came to Provo for the first month, I couldn't ask anything to neighbors and I didn't want to talk with there because they didn't understand my prounciation and they usually told me "sorry? or pardon?" I hated these word, and I was completely speechless.

However, I have to try this because I didn't want a waste time foe me. So I told to my self "you have more confident in your self and you never give up to learn English very well. After that I met many Americans, and I asked many of things and I was a tutor to teach American students who wants know Korean language. It help me to improve English skills. Also, I could practice a lot. Sometimes I was embarrassed when I spoke English front of people but now I don't be shy anymore. We need have more confident. Learning English

    EMMA'S POST

I hope to show my English improvement this semester. I know I have a lot of work to do out side the class. For example read more , watching movie or ducumantary, and makes more friends from America to practice my English skills . I hope my English will be better to to take the TOEFL test soon. I know my aim will be achieve if i work hard. !!!!!!!

    Ruben's Post

In my opinion, If you want to improve your learning in the English Language, you must speak the mayority of your time with a native speaker, they are always happy to help you, so If you are friendly and smile frequently, you will enjoy this fun culture. They love to make funny things everytime so fallow them, but be carefull to spend a lot time with them because you will be crazy... just kidding, you will be fine.
I study a lot vocabulary to improve and rich my conversation, so I spend free time to memorize words. I make a schedule to learn more effectively, I put space for my favorite activities,I fixed my responsabilities, I am frexible with my priorities  and I put free and leisure  activities.
One thing I help me is to remember in my heart the people who love me,  they are proud of me, so that is one motive for study hard, some time I put on the paper my goals of my future and the date when I will achive them, do not get distracted or discouraged, all challenges are temporary. You must do your homework for your future, no for the teacher do not compete with their peers, you need to compete with yourself, you must be better than yourself, You can ask you if you are better than yesterday.
I study the grammar and vocabulary by myself and I ask to my foreigners friends when I can use some words or frases in the real life. There are many exceptions in the English Lenguage so I am open mind for new ways to use the word and frases. well I just enjoyed to learn, I find many fun situations in my learning like today for example I was practicing today the verb " overcome " so i made the sentence: I overcame the English and my friend said: you spoke wrong because that mean that I overcame people from england.  ha ha, the correct form is I overcome the English Language. so cool I was laughing of my mistake.

    Motivation of Learning English

You must define what your motivation of learn English is and always keep it in your mind. Continue to do one thing without non-stop is hard so if you love what you are doing that would help a lot. Motivation will keep pushing you to reach your goal. That's my strategy and I want to know how best I can be. Don't compete with others, compete with myself to see if I improved or not. Learning English is fun, we can work it out!!!

What is one strategy you have used to learn English?

English needs a lot of skills to improve your ability. I want to share one strategy to memorize vocabulary. We usually take a note to memorize to word that we don't know. After make a list that you don't know or you see the first time, just look over. Don't memorize one by one. If you just look over hastily for several time, you will find yourself who already memorized those word before you know. If you want to memorize also spelling, you need to memorize one by one. However, I think it is helpful when you want to just memorize to mean about word and fast.

How Improve Your Listening in English

Learn a new language is no easy. You need to work hard. In the first time when I came to the United States I could not understand when the poeple spoke to me. I was thinking what was happening because I studied 5 years hago english in my country. then I decided to practice my english but it was almost imposible because everybody to my friend are working. I was thinking in other ways and I decided to whatch moviesevery day only in english whitout subtitles: in the firs time it was so bored but with the time I learned new words and I became bettet and better. It help me to improve my listening.

What is one strategy you have used to learn english?r

read books that you know very well in your native language in english.
when you read a book that you aready know the context it is a good way to learn english because you know what the book is talking about , your capacity to assimilate the words that you do not know will increase so much and will be easily to remenber those words.

THIS IS WHAT LEARNING ENGLISH IS ABOUT

I am here in Utah for one year, and I am still learning English. I think having a foreigner girlfriend would make feel more comfortable with speaking and listening English. However, if I meet only girlfriend, it can be waste of time and take a lot of time. So, it is not the only best way to learn English. Because, we came here for studying English. Do not be shy and do not be afraid of speaking to native speakers, make a study buddy, and open the ELC website to sign up for a tutor. Do the homework and work hard! It is the only way to obtain English skills!!RESPECT YOUR TEACHER.

    Having fun

To me it has been really helpful for me that still having fun while learning English. It's like if you stay interesting about something, you always want to know it better. Since I keep tracking for more details, I learn when I play. So memorizing lyrics could be a lot of fun for people who likes to sing; and movies(especially comedies), Soap operas, TV shows are all really helpful for everyday speaking. But remember, English subtitles! Just like singing a song, I like to repeat what they say, and try to think in English has been helpful, too. :)

What is on strategy you have use to learEnglish?

Even though I have studied about reading before, I am not good at it. I know some English reading skills: read as quicklu as you can and don't stop reading when you don't understand the vacabulary. I find that Latins read mor quicklu than Asians. I have asked them how they can do it. "Just read the key words and verbs," they said. I think practic makes perfect.

"What Is One Strategy You Have Used To Learn English?"

I don't have any good strategies to learn English effectively. If I'd had one, my English wouldn't have been like this... But I think that listening to English music might help your English pronunciation. I've loved to listen to English music since I was in high school, and it has made me get used to pronounce English correctly.
Also, I can learn many English expressions from the lyrics as I memorize them. Sometimes it is not really useful, though. Because words of songs are sometimes like poems. So some lyrics are inappropriate in daily life. It depends on the song. If native speakers laugh at you as you use new expression that you've learned from music, just stop using it. Or you can use it purposely to make people laugh.
Anyways, listening to English music is at least a very good strategy to improve your English pronunciation . Moreover, it is fun!! Oh, but do not learn swearwords!! :)

    Talking with everybody

I have been living in US for the last one year, and I always enjoy to ask people questions and talk to everybody, even when I don't know how to manage the whole conversation. Usually people are friendly and they answer questions and they keep the conversation. Also, for many times I was surprised with people who started a new conversation with me, and I was never afraid to talk to them. Doing this, I always get more confidence and pratice in English. Additionally I set my radio on NPR News (90.1 FM) and that give me a lot information to use in my conversation day by day, and also, traines my listening skills. All in all, my recipe for everyone is never to be afraid and never loose one opportunity to talk.
